A technically suitable lighting project can still miss a program route if equipment is purchased through the wrong channel, a required approval has not been obtained, the product is not on the applicable list, the installation begins too early, or the customer and building are not eligible.
Program rules should influence the project sequence only after the lighting scope itself makes sense for the facility.

Prepare enough detail to identify the possible route
- Business and facility type, Ontario installation address, ownership or tenant status, and employee count where relevant
- Existing fixture technology, representative wattage, quantities, condition, and hours of use
- Proposed product type, controls, quantities, distributor or procurement route, and installation timing
- Whether the project is an existing-building retrofit, new construction, or a broader custom energy project
- Whether other Save on Energy funding or discounts have already been used for the same measures
- Who will confirm program eligibility and maintain the required documentation

Retain invoices, product information, quantities, installation address, approvals, applications, calculations, and completion documents required by the route.

Important distinctions before a lighting project starts
Do all commercial LED lighting projects qualify for incentives?
No. Eligibility depends on the customer, building, project, measure, product, distributor, installer, application or purchase timing, prior incentives, and current program rules.
Can we use our own contractor for Small Business Program upgrades?
The official Small Business Program FAQ says no: only qualified Save on Energy contractors may install equipment eligible under that direct-install program. Work outside that program can follow a different procurement path.
What is the Instant Discounts Program?
It provides point-of-purchase discounts on eligible energy-efficient lighting products purchased from participating distributors for qualifying existing Ontario commercial, industrial, institutional, agricultural, or multi-unit residential facilities.
Are networked lighting controls still in the Retrofit Program?
As of the July 24, 2026 review date, Save on Energy lists Networked Lighting Controls under Retrofit, while most standard lighting measures moved to Instant Discounts effective June 30, 2026. Confirm the current list before proceeding.
When should incentive eligibility be checked?
Before purchasing eligible equipment, signing commitments that affect eligibility, or starting work when program rules require pre-approval or a particular purchase or installer route. Confirm current timing directly with the program provider.
Who determines the final incentive amount?
